Testimonies of Faith
In the United Church of Christ there is a common saying that we have “testimonies of faith, not tests of faith.” Throughout church history there have been various creeds and catechisms to help people understand Scripture and the doctrines of the faith. Some churches require complete agreement of the creeds and catechisms as a way of knowing if people belong to their church. However, the UCC seeks to unite people in Christ even if they have theological differences, as a result we emphasize freedom of conscience when it comes to historical creeds and catechisms. Even in areas of disagreement, we believe that the creeds and catechisms help us to understand Scripture and are a testimony of Christ.
